SHE DOES IT ALL: Laura Roppe - Download
San Diego native Laura Roppe's picture doesn't appear in the dictionary next to the word "multi-tasking," but it should.
By day, she's a partner at the San Diego law firm of Tatro & Zamoyski, where she specializes in employment and contract law. Her expertise in both of these fields comes in handy, no doubt, for her second career as a singer who just released her first solo album, "Girl Like This," and was -- until recently -- the lead vocalist in the group CoolBandLuke.
A USD grad who also has a degree in theater arts from UCLA, Roppe is also the married mother of two young daughters, a fact that no doubt helped inspire her songs "Little Daughter" and "Mama Needs A Girls Night Out" on her album.
Roppe will discuss her album, which features cameos by everyone from North County multi-instrumental wiz Dennis Caplinger to RX Bandits guitarist Methew Embree (who happens to be Roppe's cousin).

THE WORST KIND OF WAY: San Diego singer-songwriter Delaney Gibson - Download
San Diego alternative-folk-pop singer-songwriter Delaney Gibson will release her debut album in September. A classically trained singer, Delaney has a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Cal State Northridge. Last year, she released her six-song EP, "Cruel and Beautiful" (the title of which may possibly have been inspired by one of my former girlfriends, but we won't go there). Delaney has toured with artists as varied as Barbra Streisand and Andrea Bocelli, although her own music has a lot more bite than that of her past collaborators. Equally adept on piano and guitar, she was featured as -- surprise! -- a singer on an episode of TV's "Boston Public."
In addition to talking about her upcoming album, "The Worst Kind of Way," Delaney will perform a song live. She'll also play and discuss some of her favorite recordings by everyone from Dolly Parton and Ryan Adams to Nina Simone and My Chemical Romance.

NO AIR GUITAR ALLOWED! Steve Weinberger - Download
Back in the old days, "rock concert etiquette" meant little more than trying not to hurl on the conertgoer next to you or remembering not to bogart that whatever-you-called-it thing-ie before you passed out in a stupor during the opening act's set. But it's a new day and San Diego's Steve Weinberger is here to set the record straight with his book, "No Air Guitar Allowed." (That's Steve at the right, in the black shirt, with drummer Peter Criss of Kiss.)
Steve, who esitmates he has attended more than 1,000 concerts, counts everyone from Kiss and The Who to Modest Mouse and Kings of Leon among his favorites.
Steve, who has a master's degree in Special Education, will also play some of his favorite cuts by AC/DC, Radiohead, Toad The Wet Sprocket and Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band.

THE KILLER RETURNS: Multi-instrumental wiz Ray Suen - Download
Ray Suen knows how to make an impression. His guest appearance on last Monday's show was so interesting -- local music luminaries Gregory Page and Joanie Mendenhall both phoned in with questions and praise for Ray -- that we invited Ray back for an encore appearance this Monday.
Ray, who leaves for Las Vegas Tuesday to begin rehearsing for a European tour with The Killers, is equally skilled on violin, guitar and various other stringed instruments. He performs locally as a member of The Exfriends and in Joanie Mendenhall's band, The Joanie Men. He spent much of last year as a touring member of Louis XIV, who hired him in large part so that he could singlehandedly cover on stage the parts of the string orchestra featured on the band's second album.
As he discussed on last week's show, Ray recently signed an exclusive contract with The KIllers, with whom he will work as a touring band member for at least the next 18 months. On this Monday's show, Ray will play and discuss some of his favorite recordings by such varied artists as Charles Mingus, Tom Waits, Wu-Tang Clan, Hank Wiliams and Nat "King" Cole.

In honor of his terrific new album, "All Make Believe," San Diego troubadour Gregory Page will join me for a live radio interview that will be mostly make-believe -- or not.

But when it comes to details -- he was born in England (no, India, or is it Indiana?), his mother was in The Beatles, and he's released 419 albums -- well, you'll just have to hear for yourself.

DAN PAPAILA: Versatile San Diego guitarist - Download
Dan Papaila may be one of San Diego's leading jazz guitarists, but his blues and R&B credits are impressive in their own right.
Big Joe Turner, Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson, Big Mama Thornton, Percy Mayfield and Johnny "Hammond" Smith are among the blues and R&B greats Dan has worked with. During his tenure with Hammond organ dynamo Smith, he toured extensively through the south on the Chitlin' circuit. An in-demand guitar teacher (Anna Troy is one of his students), Papaila has also worked with such jazz luminaries as Herbie Hancock, Eddie Harris, Jimmy Smith, Blue Mitchell and Hank Crawford, as well as collaborating with Sheila E. and Randy Crawford.

She's also the driving force behind Say It Records and the Indie By Design concert series. Champion, a native of Singapore, heads her own indie label, Champ Records, and is second only to LoPresti as a driving force behind San Diego Indie Fest.

ANTI-FOLK LIVES: Cindy Lee Berryhill - Download
Singer-songwriter Cindy Lee Berryhill has been a mainstay of the San Diego music scene for the past 20 years.
As timely as she is provocative, Cindy Lee made some waves with her 2006 song, "When Did Jesus Become a Republican?" But this veteran San Diego singer-songwriter has been bucking convention since the 1980s when she was part of the same anti-folk scene in New York that also yielded Beck and Roger Manning. Not coincidentally, Beck and Manning both contribute background vocals to Cindy Lee's 1990 album, "Naked Movie Star."
She unveiled her debut album -- "Who Will Save the World?" -- in 1987 and has since released five more, the most recent being last year's "Beloved Stranger." She is also the leader of her excellent band, The Garage Orchestra, which at various times has featured former members of The Penetrators and The Harry Partch Ensemble.

Guitar wiz Mike Keneally encores - Download
Once wasn't enough for San Diego guitar wiz Mike Keneally, who will be the guest Monday for the second time in a row on Fill In The Blank. The decision to invite Mike back was prompted by the enthusiastic phone calls last Monday (one from a fan in Michigan) and by Mike's wealth of fascinating stories about his work with Frank Zappa, XTC and other music luminaries. Mike has 16 solo albums to his credit, dating back to his 1992 debut, "Hat." The former leader of the San Diego band Drop Control, he first gained international attention in 1987 when he replaced Steve Vai as the "stunt guitarist" in Zappa's final touring band.

Billy Thompson, one of San Diego's leading guitarists, singers, songwriters and band leaders
Not to be confused with the U.K. jazz violinist Billy Thompson or the former Denver Broncos running back of the same name, Billy has been a mainstay of the San Diego music scene since the late 1970s. It was then that he co-founded The Fingers, a pioneering San Diego rock band that also included Paul Kamanski and Joey Harris.
After The Fingers disbanded in the early 1980s, Billy went on to lead his own band, The Mighty Penguins, and to work with such blues greats as Little Milton and Larry "Arkansas" Davis. Billy's resume also includes work with country-music pioneer Tex Willliams, Bruce Willis and many more, including, um, Gary Puckett.
Bill will discuss his career and play excerpts from some of his favorite records by the artists who have most inspired him.

Jose -- or "The Hose", as he's fondly known by some fans and various other appliances -- is a San Diego institution. Or, perhaps, he's been in a San Diego institution. Or maybe it's both, but why quibble over details?
Regardless, Sinatra plans to discuss some of his landmark solo albums, including such collector's items as "Knowing Me, Touching Me," "Education & Outreach," "Knowing Me Again, Touching Me Again," and, of course, the seminal foodie favorite, "Tears of Salsa, Tongue of Pork." He'll also talk briefly about what the holidays mean to him (vacation) and make semi-coherent statements about "Hosing Down," his monthly music and cultural musings column in San Diego Troubadour.

This week's guest is Rob Hagey, the founder of both Street Scene and the San Diego Jazz Festival. Hagey's love of many styles of music -- from blues, gospel and rock (in all its permutations) to jazz, world music and more -- should make this our most diverse show yet. As with our previous guests, who have ranged from Shambles leader Bart Mendoza and Casbah honcho Tim Mays to singer-songwriters Sara Petite and Cathryn Beeks, Hagey has selected about 15 of his favorite artists. We'll listen to excerpts of music by each and then talk about why they appeal to him.

But Petite, who earned a well-deserved San Diego Music Award nomination this year, is more than just a talented troubadour with a batch of heartfelt Americana songs to her credit.
She's also the dirving force behind the annual Becky's House benefit concert, which she launched last year at the Ould Sod as a fundraiser for Becky's House, an 18-month transitional residential program for survivors of domestic violence and their children. The second Becky's House benefit will be held Saturday at downtown's San Diego Wine and Cuilnary Center. The lineup will include more than a dozen leading local talents, including Lisa Sanders, Anna Troy, Joanie Mendenhall, Cathryn Beeks, Steph Johnson, The Flimz and Petite herself.

Rock the Casbah: Tim Mays speaks to George Varga - Download
Tim Mays may not play in a band, but, over the past few decades, he's done more to promote and bring good music to San Diego than almost anyone else you can name.
As the driving force behind the Skeleton Club back in the late 1970s and -- more recently -- The Casbah, this city's most renowned live indie-rock venue, he's showcased hundreds of local, regional, national and international acts over the years. They range from X, Lydia Lunch and Arcade Fire to Alanis Morissette, Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings and such homegrown favorites as Rocket From the Crypt, El Vez and Trumans Water, to name just a few.
